A Tandem Roller is a piece of machinery, powered by steam, diesel or gasoline, used in the paving of road, making it an integral part of road constructions. The Tandem Roller consists of two highly heavy steel rollers of unequal size fitted to a chassis. The Tandem Roller to smooth out and compact asphalt or blacktop before it cools and hardens. The steel drums are often cooled with a stream of water to prevent the pavement from sticking to the roller. Many Tandem Rollers also contain vibratory units aboard the machinery to help in compacting the pavement as the heavy tandem roller passes over it.
